TRANSPORTATION & HEALTH ACCESS
Check service boundaries before booking; regional programs do not necessarily cover every city address.
Plan a safe ride
Ask about wheelchair access, children/car seats, reservation deadlines, fares, return trips and whether pickup information is shared. For an urgent escape, ask a DV advocate about safe options; a bus route may not provide enough protection.

SAFETY PLANNING & TECHNOLOGY
Use these prompts with an advocate. Choose the steps that fit your situation; do not confront an abusive person to follow this checklist.
Immediate Safety
Identify a safe place, a trusted contact and an exit/ride plan. Agree on a code phrase if safe. Teach children to seek help rather than intervene. You can request support without committing to leave.
Documents, Medicine and Money
If safe, gather IDs, birth certificates, medications, keys, necessary phone numbers, court orders, school/medical records and some money. Do not delay emergency help because documents are missing. An advocate can help with replacements.
Children, School and Work
Discuss safe pickup rules and authorized contacts with appropriate staff. Keep existing court/parenting orders available and ask a lawyer before changing a court-ordered arrangement. Ask about safe exchanges and trauma support.
Location Sharing & Shared Accounts
Consider Apple/Google accounts, family sharing, photos, maps, vehicle apps, smart-home cameras, wearables and shared phone plans. Private browsing does not hide activity from account holders, spyware or network monitoring.
Passwords, Trackers, Evidence
From a safer device, make a plan before changing passwords, disconnecting accounts or disabling a tracker: changes can alert an abuser. If safe, preserve original messages, screenshots and dates in a place the abuser cannot access. Ask an advocate about documenting safely.
Pets, Access & Privacy
Include pet food, medicines and records in a plan if safe; ask about foster/boarding before travel. Include mobility equipment, communication devices and personal-care support. Keep shelter addresses and safe contact information private.

A simple way to start a call
"I am looking for help with ___. I am in ____ County. Is it safe to explain my situation here? Please contact me only by ________ at _______. Is this service available now? What do I need to bring? What can I do if documents are missing?"
You can ask about confidentiality and mandatory-reporting expectations before sharing details. Ask for another referral if a program is full or you do not qualify.
